In strength, yes — at least 895 MPa tensile, above ordinary structural steel. But the elastic modulus is about 110 GPa, half of steel's roughly 200 GPa, so the same load deflects twice as much; stiffness-driven parts need larger sections or a different shape. Weight drops to 57%.
Ti-6Al-4V (GR5) machined parts — high-strength titanium alloy structural parts
Ti-6Al-4V (GR5) is an alpha-beta titanium alloy with 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium that accounts for about half of all titanium used worldwide; it delivers at least 895 MPa tensile strength at 57% of steel's weight. Octud supplies CNC-machined structural parts in this grade from customer drawings.
When people say 'titanium alloy' they usually mean this one. As strong as steel at close to half the weight, and it does not rust. The trade-offs: it is the hardest titanium to machine, and for medical use it must be respecified as the ELI grade (F136).
GR5 is an alpha-beta alloy whose strength can be raised further by heat treatment. In the annealed condition the specification minima are 895 MPa tensile and 828 MPa yield, and its balance of fatigue strength and fracture toughness carried it from aerospace structures into industrial equipment, marine and energy parts. At 4.43 g/cm³ it is 57% of steel's density and 1.6 times aluminium's — used where the same strength must weigh less, or where aluminium cannot reach the strength.
Machining is among the hardest in titanium. Hardness generates heat, low thermal conductivity (about 7 W/m·K) keeps it at the tool edge, and reactivity with tool materials causes adhesion and rapid wear. Lower cutting speed, maintained feed and high-pressure coolant are the baseline, and deep holes, thin walls or precision threads are checked against the 3D model before production. Material price is not the only reason machining costs more than steel.
The typical Korean enquiry is a conversion from stainless or aluminium — to cut weight (stainless to Ti), raise strength (aluminium to Ti), or remove corrosion in chloride service. One design point to carry over: the elastic modulus is about half of steel's, so the same load deflects twice as much.

Before ordering
- 01For medical device parts specify ELI (ASTM F136), not GR5
- 02Check the design allows for the modulus (half of steel) — deflection and chatter
- 03Tight tolerances only where needed; general tolerance (ISO 2768-m or similar) elsewhere
- 04Deep holes, thin walls and precision threads need the 3D model (STEP)
