High-Performance Sulfone Polymers (PSU, PESU, PPSU)

Polysulfone (PSU), polyethersulfone (PESU) and polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) are amorphous super engineering plastics combining transparency with exceptional heat and hydrolysis resistance — the standard materials for medical devices, membranes and food-contact parts. Octud is an official distributor of BASF Ultrason® and supplies the full grade range from Korean stock, with cross-reference data against Syensqo Udel®, Veradel® and Radel®.

PRODUCT FAMILIES
PSU
Polysulfone
187°C
Tg (glass transition)

The best cost-to-performance balance in the sulfone family. Transparent, and widely used for water filtration housings, food-contact parts and electrical insulation components.

PESU
Polyethersulfone
225°C
Tg (glass transition)

The highest heat resistance and stiffness in the sulfone family. Suited to high-temperature filtration membranes, aircraft interiors and hot electrical components.

PPSU
Polyphenylsulfone
220°C
Tg (glass transition)

Notched impact 70 kJ/m² (ISO 179, no break) — no break under notched impact — and resistance to more than 1,000 repeated steam sterilization cycles, making it the standard for reusable medical devices.

Browse by family

PSU, PESU and PPSU differ in properties and applications. Choose a family for its grades, property data and equivalency.

Key advantages

  • Withstands repeated steam and autoclave sterilization
  • Outstanding hydrolysis resistance in hot water and steam
  • Dimensional stability maintained up to 180°C
  • Honey-toned optical transparency
  • Broad chemical resistance to detergents, oils and solvents
  • Excellent electrical insulation and dielectric behaviour
  • Inherently flame retardant — self-extinguishing

BASF Ultrason® goes into Kyoraku's reusable Amberware design tableware

BASF supplied the polyethersulfone grade Ultrason® E 3010 nat to Kyoraku of Japan, which used it for a reusable design tableware line called Amberware. What was announced, and what to check if you are looking at the same material here.

EU bisphenol restriction (2024/3190) and recertifying high-temperature food-contact materials

It is easy to assume only PC has to change, but BPA-based PSU and BPS-based PESU also require recertification for food contact. Here is the scope, the exemptions and the route to PPSU.

Frequently asked questions

BASF Ultrason® S 2010 is the equivalent standard-viscosity transparent PSU injection molding grade, matching on tensile strength, HDT and other key properties. Octud supplies it from Korean stock and provides evaluation samples.

BASF Ultrason® P 3010 is the equivalent PPSU grade, delivering the same non-break notched impact toughness and resistance to over 1,000 repeated steam sterilization cycles.

All three are amorphous sulfone polymers — transparent with excellent hydrolysis resistance. PSU offers the best cost-performance balance, PESU the family's highest glass transition (Tg 225°C) and stiffness, and PPSU the greatest impact toughness and repeated steam sterilization durability.

Yes. Where a part must stay transparent but needs far greater heat, hydrolysis and chemical resistance than PC can offer, sulfone polymers are the standard replacement.
