Udel® P-1700 · P-1710 Equivalent — BASF Ultrason® S Grades
Udel® P-1700 is the standard-viscosity transparent polysulfone (PSU) injection grade long used for water-filter housings, kitchen appliances and electrical insulation parts; P-1710 is its higher-viscosity version. BASF Ultrason® S 2010 and S 3010 occupy the same positions. In a PSU switch the real gatekeeper is not mechanical properties — those are broadly equivalent — it is drinking-water and food-contact approval.

Higher viscosity — thick-walled parts, extruded profiles, or where more toughness and chemical resistance is needed.
If demoulding or cycle time is the problem, S 3010 MR is the release-optimised version of S 3010; where the highest toughness among injection grades is needed, there is ultra-high-viscosity S 6010.

Syensqo and Victrex publish to ASTM; BASF publishes Ultrason® data to ISO. Specimen geometry and test conditions differ, so the two columns cannot be compared one-to-one. Use the table to judge whether the grades sit in the same class — ask us if you need data measured to a single standard.
Where a PSU switch actually gets blocked
Similar property tables do not mean a clear path. These are the places a switch actually stalls.
- Drinking-water and food-contact approvals are managed per colour
- A water-filter housing brings NSF/ANSI 61 into play; tableware and cooking parts bring NSF/ANSI 51, FDA and EU 10/2011. These listings are sometimes held per colour as well as per grade — cases exist where only the natural colour is listed and pigmented versions are separate. The two products' listings do not automatically match, so this has to be checked part by part. We can pull the certification documents you need.
- Hot water and detergent cycling is the real failure mode
- Field failures in PSU parts rarely come from room-temperature properties; they come from repeated exposure to hot water, steam and alkaline detergents. Hydrolytic resistance and environmental stress cracking (ESCR) decide the outcome, and neither appears in a typical property table. If your current part survives that environment, the replacement has to be verified under the same conditions — we can supply chemical-resistance data.
- Colour shift is visible on transparent parts
- PSU is a transparent material with an inherent honey tone, and that tone varies subtly between producers and lots. For sight windows or visible parts, put the candidate next to the current part and check by eye. This is not a property that gets managed numerically.
How to evaluate the switch
- 01Start from the part's contact media and required approvals (drinking water / food / medical, service temperature, cleaning regime).
- 02Check required properties against the Ultrason® S 2010 or S 3010 TDS, and verify approval items separately against the certification documents.
- 03Mould evaluation samples in your existing tool and check filling, release, dimensions and appearance. On transparent parts, check colour tone too.
- 04Start from the TDS drying, barrel and mould temperatures. If defects appear, work through the troubleshooting guide.
- 05For parts exposed to hot water or detergents, finish with immersion and cycling tests under real service conditions.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I drop Ultrason® S 2010 straight into a Udel® P-1700 part?
- It is the same PSU family — a standard-viscosity transparent injection grade with tensile strength, modulus, HDT and Tg all close. But an equivalency judgement does not replace design verification, and drinking-water or food-contact approvals must be checked per grade and colour. Compare the TDS first, then mould samples in your existing tool.
- What replaces the higher-viscosity P-1710?
- Ultrason® S 3010. It suits thick-walled parts, extruded profiles, and applications needing more toughness and chemical resistance. Where release is difficult there is S 3010 MR, and where the highest injection-grade toughness is required, ultra-high-viscosity S 6010.
- What documents do I need for a water-treatment part?
- Depending on the application: NSF/ANSI 61 (drinking-water contact), NSF/ANSI 51 (food equipment), FDA food contact, EU 10/2011. Listing has to be confirmed for the specific grade and colour — we will provide the current certification documents and tell you what else is needed.
- Where can I buy Ultrason® S grades in Korea?
